I picked this book up, because I wanted to re-read it as an adult to see if it would still have the same impact on me that it had when I was a child, and I found that the impact was even greater. It's such a powerful tale. I laughed, and I cried. This story will really tug at your heart. It's beautifully written, a true masterpiece. I love it as much now as I did when I was a child.What I love most about it is that it's told from the point of view of a horse, but not in a cartoonish manner. Even though this is a great story for kids, there is no silliness like animals talking to people or acting like people. It's the story of a horse in the horse's own words, and what an excellent story it is. It takes place at a time when there was an entire industry that thrived at the expense of horses and treated them very cruelly. Black Beauty gives us a very up close and personal look at what it was like for the unfortunate horses caught up in it.
This is a wonderful book for both children and adults and one I heartily recommend. Sewell clearly poured her soul into this work when she wrote it and produced an immortal masterpiece. It's a timeless tale that will continue to be read for centuries to come. It's still as charming as it was when I read it as a child. Now that I'm older I've grown to appreciate the important message of this brilliant story that thoroughly condemns the mistreatment of animals.
I highly recommend this book, especially if you are a horse lover. It takes you into another world where you meet the most memorable characters. This book is charming tale but also a fine literary masterwork. It's a must-read.

I was in search of a children's edition, this one is a bit advanced for my needs.
I bought this book for my niece. I remember how much I loved it as a child, and I wanted her to have the same heartwarming experience to look back on. This is a fascinating tale that takes you back to the horse and buggy days, and it's unique in that it's told from the point of view of a horse. In this story we follow the adventures of Black Beauty as he passes from master to master. Some of his masters are kind and gentle and others are thoughtless and cruel. One master in particular causes Black Beauty to lead an agonizing existence.
Another thing I love about this book in addition to its story that engages both heart and mind is that it was so popular and influential that it caused legislation, which stopped cruelty to horses, to be enacted. It's still very popular even now over a century later.
This is an excellent story, one you will want to read again and again. I have read it four times myself. I thoroughly enjoyed Black Beauty's friendships with the other horses, the twists and turns of the plot, seeing the world from Black Beauty's point of view, the ups and downs of his life, and moments of edge of your seat suspense like when Black Beauty is caught in a burning barn.
I love this book so much I'm looking for an excuse to read it my niece. If you have never read this story, you're in for a real treat. It's a very imaginative and heartwarming tale and a masterpiece in the genre of children's literature, a classic of classics. I strongly recommend it even if you don't have kids.
